Course Information

Course Description:

Spanish for Human Resources Professionals is a course designed to enable those in the field of human resources to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking individuals.  It is intended for those who know little or no Spanish.

Course Objectives:

 Students will learn the following: 
 
1. Basic Spanish words and phrases common in the field of human resources.
2. How to give Commands
3. How to ask questions using interrogatives
4. Basic grammar concepts and punctuation
5. Important cultural information and "Spanglish"
6. Students will practice speaking Spanish in order to become comfortable with using it on a daily basis.    Practice makes better!!!!
 
Prerequisites and Corequisites:
There are no prerequisites for this course.  Students need to be motivated to learn Spanish, have a desire to practice what they are learning, and be willing to learn from their mistakes.  Fluency in Spanish should not be expected upon completion of this course, as it is not imperative that one be fluent in order to communicate effectively.

Assessment and Grading
Testing Procedures:
All tests (including the final exam) and quizzes will be administered online via WebCT.
Grading Procedure:
Students must maintain a 75% average in the course in order to pass the course and receive the C.E.U. credits for the course.

The grading scale should emphasize assignments, projects, and student participation in the learning community as well as timed quizzes and periodic examinations.

Assignments and Projects:
A sequenced list of assignments and projects arranged by course section or module with due dates if applicable.
Class Participation:
It is imperative that students participate in all interactive aspects of the course.  Students are expected to communicate with other students in threaded discussions, and students are required to communicate with the instructor as a learning resource.  Students must check the course frequently for announcements.  
Punctuality:
As the course activities follow a weekly schedule, students are expected to stay current with the course calendar.  Assignments are to be completed by their respective due dates in order to receive credit. 
Course Ground Rules
All students are expected to actively participate in the course, communicating with other students and the instructor.  It is expected that all students learn how to use WebCT (technical problems are to be addressed immediately).  Students are responsible for checking the course frequently, keeping up with the calendar, and completing course assignments on time. 
Guidelines for Communications
Email:
  • Always include a subject line.
  • Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members
Discussion Groups:
  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas.
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
  • Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
Chat:
  • Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session.
  • Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements.
  • Be concise in responding to others in the chat session.
  • Be prepared to open the chat session at the scheduled time.
  • Be constructive in your comments and suggestion

Links to library materials (such as electronic journals, databases, interlibrary loans, digital reserves, dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and librarian support) and Internet resources needed by learners to complete online assignments and as background reading must be included in all courses.
