Course Information

Course Description:

The course is designed to introduce Emergency Medical Services responders to Spanish phrases and terms that are commonly used in the initial assessment of illness and injuries, enabling them to communicate more effectively with Spanish-speaking individuals.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  • Use basic Spanish words and phrases relative to the initial assessment of illness and injury including general information (age, name, who, what, where, when, and why, etc.), body parts (head and neck, thoracic and upper extremity, abdominal area, legs and feet).
  • Give commands.
  • Ask questions.
  • Use basic grammar concepts.
  • Understand cultural differences.
  • Interact with family.

Prerequisites and Corequisites:

There are no prerequisites or corequisites for the course.  No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.  Students must have the discipline to work online and be motivated to learn and practice the language.  Satisfactory completion of each module or section is required to move to the next module or section of the course.

Course Topics:

Topics include:

  • The 5 “Ws,” – Who, What, When, Where, Why
  • Name, age, etc. – general information
  • Cultural  differences
  • Basic questions referring to the head and neck area (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, front and back)
  • Basic questions referring to the Thoracic and upper extremity area (chest, back, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers)
  • Basic questions referring to the abdomen (stomach, liver, kidneys, gall bladder, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.)
  • Basic questions referring to the legs and foot (thigh front and back, Tibia/Fibula front and back, knee, ankle, foot, toes)
  • Basic commands
  • Family interaction

Specific Course Requirements:

 Students should have a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:

All tests and quizzes will be administered online via WebCT.  Students must successfully complete each section test/quiz before moving to the next.

Grading Procedure:

Students must maintain a 70% average in order to move from one section to the next and to pass the course.  CEUs will be awarded upon successful course completion.

Grading Scale:

S  Satisfactory (70% and above)

U  Unsatisfactory (below 70%)

Assignments and Participation

Assignments and Projects:

Students will receive a sequenced list of assignments and tests/quizzes arranged by course section or module with due dates where applicable.

Class Participation:

It is essential that all students participate in all interactive aspects of the course.  Students are expected to interact with the instructor and other students in the course.  Students should check course announcements regularly.

Punctuality:

Students are expected to stay current with the course calendar.

Email:

  • Always include a subject line.
  • Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members

Discussion Groups:

  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas.
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
  • Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

Chat:

  • Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session.
  • Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements.
  • Be concise in responding to others in the chat session.
  • Be prepared to open the chat session at the scheduled time.
  • Be constructive in your comments and suggestion
