Objectives

The student will learn how to natigate in WebCt Vista. The student will write his/her classmates a "get to know you" e-mail. The student will enter the Discussion topic of the instructor choice to learn how to communicate with his/her classmates.

Topics

This module is to familiarize the student with using WebCT Vista.

Assignments

Use this first week to learn how to navigate through the course. Visit the Study Skills Folder and review the informaton on study tipes and exam preparation. Send your classmates a "get to know you" e-mail. Enter the discussion about how you plan to study and join in the discussion on study tips.

Module 2

Objectives

The student will become familiar with the different theories and theorists of management. The student will understand the four functions of management and their importance. The student will be able to differinate between leaders and managers. The student will understand the importance of motivation in managing people. The student will learn the theories of motivation and the role motivation plays in human behavior. The student will be able to identify the types of decision-making processes. The student will learn how to handle change in organizations. The student will be given a brief overview of production/operation management and marketing management.

Topics

In Module 1, we will cover the principles and theories of management. The four functions of management will be discussed bringing in the importance of leadership and the theories of motivation and human behavior. How change and decision-making plays a role in management is covered in this chapter. Also an overview of production/operations management and marketing management will be covered.

Module 3

Lesson title

Module 3

Objectives

The student will access future employee needs by learning how to do a needs assessment. The student will learn how to recruit and interview future employees. The student will be able to distinguish the types of performance evaluations used by organizations. The student will learn the laws regulating the workplace and employee discrimination. The student will learn the laws regarding labor-management relations. The student will understand the disciplinary and grievance processes in both nonunion and union organizations. The student will learn the importance of the employee separation process.

Topics

In Module 2, we will cover how to conduct a needs assessment for an organization and the importance of the needs assessment in predicting future employee hiring. The recruiting and selection process for hiring employees will be discussed. The different types of employee evaluations will be reviewed, and why it is important to conduct annual employee evaluations. In Module 3, all the laws and regulations regarding the workplace will be discussed including discrimination and labor-management laws. The types of disciplinary actions and grievance procedures will be covered in this module. The reasons for employee separation and the organization's discharge procedure will be covered also.

Objectives

The student will learn the purpose of a job analysis and be able to differinate between a job description and a job specification. The student will learn how to conduct a needs assessment, set up a training program, and evaluate a training program. The student will learn the difference between job training and organizational development. The student will understand the terminology used in compensation plans, employee benefits, and reward program and be able to distinguish the difference in each. The student will learn the necessity of effective records keeping.

In Module 4, we will cover the job analysis process which includes job descriptions, job specifications, task analysis, and job evaluation. We will discuss job training: how to conduct a needs assessment, how to set up a training program, and the types of training programs available. We will also cover rganizational development will be covered in this module. In Module 5, we will go over the types of compensation plans, employee benefits, and reward programs available to employees. Records management will be reviewed in this module.

Objectives

The student will learn what a voucher system is used and how to use a voucher system. The student will learn to how to set up a petty cash system and how to make the correct journal entries. The student will understand payroll accounting. The student will learn what type of income taxes are paid by employers. The student will be able to identify the types of contracts, what are the terms of contracts, and how contracts are terminated. The student will know the difference in domestic and international trade and the important terms of both types of trade.

Topics

We will cover voucher systems and petty cash as well as payroll procedures in this module. We will examine some economic aspects of domestic and international trade. We will study the types of contracts, terms of contracts, and termination of contracts.

Objectives

The student will be able to interpret a balance sheet, a statement of retained earnings, and income statement. The student will be able to compute ratios. The student will be able to figure depreciation. The student will be able to prepare a budget. The student will be able to figure the break-even point.

In this module we will discuss the types of financial statements used in accounting: balance sheets, income statements, and statements of retained earnings. We will learn how to figure ratios and depreciation and their importance to accounting. We will cover some of the main points of managerial accounting which includes preparing budgets and break-even points in costing.

Objectives

The student will learn how to complete a time audit and identify time wasters. The student will understand the necessity for goal setting and the three types of goals. The student will learn how to use the Pareto Principle in time management. The student will learn how to use the Stephen Covey's Priority Grid. The student will review stress management terminology and techniques. The student will understand the importance of effective communication in an organizaton and the types of barriers that can arise from ineffective communication. The student will learn how to handle diversity and international communication situations. The student will learn the types of groups and teams that are used by organizations. The student will learn the steps in the development of a group or team.

Topics

In Module 9, we will discuss effective time management techniques and how to eliminate time wasters from your professional life. How to use the Pareto Principle and and the Priority Grid will be discussed as well as electronic tools for time management. Stress management principles and techniques will be covered. In Module 10, the communication process will be discussed. The types of communications (verbal, nonverbal, and written) will be covered. Diversity and barriers to communication will be covered. Groups and team development will be covered in this module, including the types of formal and informal groups and teams.
